If you decide to go on a spontaneous rail trip, you often have the problem that you cannot find out the fares of the border crossing trains in the online travel planner of the local railway companies (e.g. oebb.at or bahn.de).
A handy web tool made by the Czech state railways helps you at this point.
For international connections you usually need a ticket of the "TCV Tarif" (Tarif commun international pour le transport des voyageurs) - fares of predefined route sections of the national carriers are simply added.
Note that for some international services there are special offers which are much cheaper than the TCV Tarif.
